The Patna High Court has ordered the Congress party to immediately remove an AI-generated video of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother from all social media platforms. The court also sent legal notices to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as well as to the social media companies Facebook, X and Google.
The decision was made by acting Chief Justice PB Bajantari in response to a petition that named Rahul Gandhi, the central government, and the Election Commission as parties. An Election Commission lawyer confirmed that the court issued notices to Rahul Gandhi and the social media companies while also ordering the swift removal of the video.
The video in question had been shared by the Bihar unit of the Congress party. It was an AI-generated clip showing the Prime Minister seemingly dreaming about his late mother Heeraben Modi. The video quickly led to a major political argument, with leaders from the BJP strongly criticising the Congress party. This wasn’t the first time the party faced backlash. Previously, a video showing an unknown person at a Congress-led rally in Bihar shouting insults at the Prime Minister and his mother had also caused controversy.
Following the circulation of the AI-generated video, a formal complaint was filed by Sanket Gupta, who leads the BJP’s Delhi Election Cell. The complaint led to a police report against Congress leaders for spreading what was described as an AI-generated video intended to harm the reputations of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother.
Despite the court order and the police report, the Congress party has stated that it did not intend to show any disrespect to the Prime Minister or his mother. The Bihar branch of the party also mentioned last week that it had started an internal investigation to figure out who was responsible for sharing the video before deciding on any further action.
