A heartbreaking moment in the Indian cricket history became the turning point in Rohit Sharma’s life. The star Indian batter has revealed that India’s controversial exit from the 1996 ODI World Cup semifinal against Sri Lanka inspired him to take cricket seriously and dream of winning a World Cup for his country one day.

The semifinal, played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, ended in chaos after India suffered a dramatic batting collapse while chasing Sri Lanka’s target. Disappointed by India’s performance and the team’s impending defeat, angry spectators began throwing plastic bottles, rubbish and other objects onto the field. Some fans also set fire to sections of the stadium’s seating, forcing match referee Clive Lloyd to suspend the match. As the situation failed to improve, Clive Lloyd abandoned the game and awarded Sri Lanka a default victory.
Speaking on a show that he hosts, Rohit Sharma recalled watching the incident when he was just nine years old. He explained that India’s defeat, the crowd’s reaction and Vinod Kambli’s emotional response left a lasting impression on him.
Rohit Sharma revealed that he had previously played cricket with his brothers and sisters purely for fun. However, the 1996 World Cup semifinal changed his outlook and encouraged him to pursue the sport more seriously. Living in Borivali, he began taking an interest in the cricket matches organised within his residential colony and wanted to participate in those local competitions.

The Indian star also opened up about his childhood and the financial difficulties his family faced while he was growing up. Due to the family’s circumstances, Rohit was raised by his grandfather. When he was young, his grandfather had asked Rohit’s father to leave the elder child with him while taking the younger child along.
The revelation offers a glimpse into the early experiences that shaped Rohit Sharma’s journey in cricket. What began as a childhood memory of India’s painful World Cup defeat eventually became a source of inspiration for a young boy who would go on to become one of the country’s biggest cricketing stars.
