Rohit Sharma has always been known for his elegant batting but this time it’s his fitness that has caught attention. India’s ODI captain, who last played in the IPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians, has been working tirelessly on his comeback, shedding nearly 10 kilograms in the process. Training under the guidance of his close friend and former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, Rohit has been putting in long hours at the gym.
Abhishek Nayar even shared a glimpse of Rohit’s new look online with a light-hearted note (“10000 grams later… we keep pushing @rohitsharma45”) about the weight loss.
Here is the post:
It has been a while since fans last saw Rohit Sharma in national colours. His most recent outing for India came in March when he played a match-winning knock in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, a performance that sealed the title. Since then, the opener has been away from the field but not from the grind. Earlier this month, he joined other centrally contracted players at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for a round of fitness assessments. The tests included the Yo-Yo endurance drill and bone density checks, both of which Rohit reportedly cleared with ease. Virat Kohli, meanwhile, underwent his fitness routine in London, where he now stays with his family.
Rohit is widely expected to return to competitive action on October 19, when India will meet Australia in the first of three ODIs. There had been whispers of him and Virat Kohli turning out in an unofficial India A series against Australia A in Kanpur but both were left out of that squad.
In the meantime, the selectors may turn towards youth. Abhishek Sharma, who has been in breathtaking touch at the Asia Cup with 248 runs in five innings at a strike rate above 200, is strongly tipped for his first ODI call-up.
Great going, Rohit Sharma!
