Sometimes a team needs a shake-up to rediscover its identity and Kolkata Knight Riders seem ready for exactly that. As they head into the IPL 2026 auction, the franchise is embracing a fresh philosophy under newly appointed head coach Abhishek Nayar who has wasted no time making tough, high-impact decisions aimed at restructuring the squad and freeing up crucial funds.

One of the most surprising moves has been the release of Venkatesh Iyer, who cost KKR a staggering Rs 23.75 crore in the previous auction. The decision raised eyebrows across the cricketing world but Abhishek Nayar appears determined to build a team that reflects his vision rather than relying on legacy picks.
Speaking on a show, former India cricketer Saba Karim explained that this might not be the end of the road for Venkatesh Iyer at KKR. He suggested there is a good chance that the franchise may attempt to buy him back at a more reasonable price, as releasing him has instantly opened up a large portion of their budget.
Saba Karim believes this approach is typical of Abhishek Nayar who prefers starting with a clean slate and retaining only those players who he sees as consistent contributors in the starting eleven. Others, he said, are often released and repurchased strategically to ensure better value. He even compared the situation to how the team previously valued Andre Russell, highlighting that perhaps the think-tank feels Venkatesh Iyer’s role may have run its course at this stage.
Another notable move is the decision not to retain Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Saba Karim pointed out that this clearly indicates KKR’s intention to secure a new opening batter at the auction. Ideally, they want someone who can double up as a wicketkeeper, giving the team greater balance. He also emphasised the need for a powerful lower-middle-order hitter, describing these two positions as the franchise’s highest priorities.

Venkatesh Iyer’s journey with KKR has been a roller-coaster. He burst onto the scene in 2021, scoring 370 runs in just ten games and playing a major role in KKR’s run to the final. He replicated his success in 2024 during their title-winning campaign, again scoring 370 runs. But 2025 proved tough, as he managed only 142 runs in 11 matches, with just one half-century.
With sweeping changes, a refreshed budget and Abhishek Nayar’s clear-minded approach, KKR look ready to enter the IPL 2026 auction with purpose, eager to rebuild a squad capable of challenging for another title.
