Lucknow’s IPL 2026 opener turned into a night full of drama, disappointment and online chatter as Lucknow Super Giants fell short against Delhi Capitals in a six-wicket defeat at home on Wednesday. What followed after the match only added to the attention, with team owner Sanjiv Goenka, captain Rishabh Pant and head coach Justin Langer seen in a lively discussion that quickly caught social media’s eye.

Although the conversation looked intense, it did not reach the level of controversy seen in the IPL 2024, when Sanjiv Goenka appeared visibly upset with then-captain KL Rahul after a heavy 10-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Still, the latest exchange was enough to get fans talking.

The match itself didn’t go according to plan for Lucknow. The team tried a fresh opening approach, with Rishabh Pant partnering all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, while Aiden Markram was moved down the order. However, things went wrong early in an unusual way. Rishabh Pant was run out at the non-striker’s end for 7 off 9 balls after Mukesh Kumar got a slight touch on Mitchell Marsh’s shot, sending the ball onto the stumps while Rishabh Pant was outside his crease.

Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram then tried to steady the innings but Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel dismissed Aiden Markram for 11, preventing any recovery. Lucknow struggled to build momentum and were eventually bowled out for just 141 in 18.4 overs, a total that always looked underwhelming.

Despite the low score, Lucknow’s fast bowlers gave them hope by reducing Delhi to 26 for 4 during the Powerplay, making the contest interesting. However, the game shifted once the spinners came into play. Impact substitute Sameer Rizvi delivered a standout performance, showing exactly why Chennai Super Kings had once paid Rs 8.40 crore for the Uttar Pradesh batter.

Sameer Rizvi remained unbeaten on 70 off 47 balls, hitting five fours and four sixes. Alongside the experienced Tristan Stubbs who finished on 39 not out, he guided Delhi Capitals to victory in 17.1 overs, comfortably chasing down the target and sealing an impressive win.
