Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has shared his thoughts on handling pressure and competition in international cricket, explaining why players must remain prepared for every challenge. Despite his recent struggles with the bat, Sanju Samson believes that his responsibility is to give India a strong start and he aims to deliver whenever he steps onto the field.
Sanju Samson, who was named the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, had endured four consecutive low scores before finding his rhythm again. He failed to make a significant impact in the one-off T20I against Japan, at the Asian Games, and in the opening match of the series against the West Indies. His poor run of form naturally raised questions about his place in the playing XI, particularly with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continuing to wait for an opportunity on the bench.
Following his half-century in the Ranchi T20I, broadcasters asked Sanju Samson what had changed in his approach compared to his previous four innings and how he responded when runs were not coming his way. Sanju Samson explained that there was no major difference in his approach. He said that as a professional cricketer representing India, he focuses on everything within his control, including preparation, practice, training and putting in the necessary effort.

However, he pointed out that T20 cricket is unpredictable and a player’s efforts do not always guarantee a particular result. According to Sanju Samson, batters cannot afford to slow down their approach simply because they have experienced a few failures. Instead, they must continue playing according to the demands of the format.
Sanju Samson also accepted full responsibility for his performances, making it clear that he does not blame anyone else when he fails to score runs. He stressed that scoring runs is his responsibility and that he tries to fulfill it every time he walks onto the field.
The wicketkeeper-batter also highlighted the competitive nature of international cricket, where places in the team are never guaranteed. Players must remain alert, work hard and be ready to make the most of every opportunity that comes their way.
Interestingly, Sanju Samson has scored a half-century in every T20I innings in 2026 in which he has faced at least 15 balls. His latest fifty came in the Ranchi T20I against the West Indies but the innings ultimately ended in disappointment for India.
Sanju Samson’s half-century could not prevent a defeat, as the West Indies successfully chased down India’s target of 250 runs, winning by six wickets with nine deliveries remaining.
Despite his individual contribution, the result highlighted the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket. For Sanju Samson, the focus remains on taking responsibility, delivering strong starts and continuing to perform whenever he gets the opportunity to represent India.
Well played, Sanju Samson!
