A crucial round of peace talks between the United States and Iran ended in dramatic fashion on Sunday after the Iranian delegation abruptly walked out of negotiations in Switzerland, dealing a major blow to efforts aimed at securing a long-term agreement between the two countries.
The high-stakes discussions were taking place at the Bürgenstock resort near Lake Lucerne and were widely viewed as an important step toward transforming a temporary ceasefire into a broader peace deal following months of tensions and conflict. However, the atmosphere quickly deteriorated after fresh comments from US President Donald Trump, which Iranian officials viewed as threatening and damaging to the diplomatic process.
According to Iranian state media, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi chose not to engage with US Vice President JD Vance before the talks officially began. Reports from Tehran claimed that the Iranian delegation suspended its participation in the negotiations and would not return to the table unless President Trump addressed concerns raised over his recent remarks.
Several Iranian news outlets also reported that Tehran’s representatives declined to take part in a planned photo opportunity with Vice President JD Vance before leaving the venue. One report further suggested that a Qatari negotiator avoided direct interaction with Vance during diplomatic exchanges surrounding the event.
Video footage from the venue showed Abbas Araghchi entering a room where JD Vance, members of the US delegation and international mediators were gathered in front of cameras ahead of the negotiations. During the brief interaction, Abbas Araghchi greeted and embraced Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif before leaving the room shortly afterward. JD Vance remained standing nearby during the exchange. Iranian media later portrayed the incident as a deliberate diplomatic message directed at the United States.

Before departing, Iranian officials issued a statement indicating that the delegation was reviewing its response to what it described as recent verbal threats from Donald Trump. The sudden exit immediately raised concerns among mediators who had spent months working to keep communication channels open.
Reports and videos circulating after the walkout showed Shehbaz Sharif appearing visibly disappointed as news of the Iranian departure spread through the venue. Pakistan, alongside Qatar, has played a significant role in mediation efforts since the conflict ended and has been actively encouraging dialogue between both the sides.

Despite Iran’s withdrawal, Vice President JD Vance remained at the resort together with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The American delegation continued discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and other mediators in an effort to prevent the diplomatic process from collapsing completely.
US officials strongly disputed the Iranian version of events. American representatives maintained that Iranian officials had previously agreed to appear before reporters and participate in media activities. According to US officials, Iran had even brought state media teams to cover the event before unexpectedly leaving and later presenting a different account of what had happened.
The incident has added fresh uncertainty to an already fragile peace process, with the future of the negotiations now hanging in the balance.
