Shoojit Sircar’s latest film “I Want To Talk” starring Abhishek Bachchan has struck a chord with audiences and critics alike. The movie narrates the emotional journey of a man battling cancer and his enduring bond with his daughter. Known for creating slice-of-life dramas like “Piku” and “October”, Shoojit Sircar has once again delved into profound themes of love, family and resilience.
The film holds a poignant connection to the late actor Irrfan Khan. Initially conceptualised with Irrfan Khan in mind, “I Want To Talk”took a new direction after his untimely passing in 2020 due to neuroendocrine cancer. Shoojit Sircar revealed that Irrfan struggled to mentally confront his illness, which inspired the filmmaker to explore the theme of mental strength in adversity.
Shoojit Sircar said in an interview that a friend of him faced similar situation but he didn’t let the disease break him. Shoojit added that when Irrfan was diagnosed, he kept in touch with him but the actor was not able to battle it at the mental level. Shoojit further said that on the other hand, his friend survived as he didn’t surrender to the disease and then he (Shoojit) took the decision of making this movie after the d*mise of Irrfan Khan for all those who have to fight mental battles in such situations.
Abhishek Bachchan eventually stepped into the lead role, delivering a performance that Sircar found deeply satisfying. The filmmaker acknowledged that while Abhishek Bachchan was not the initial choice, his portrayal brought an emotional depth that resonated with the film’s essence. During a podcast, Shoojit Sircar said that though it was supposed to be played by Irrfan, Abhiskek came quite close to that.
Describing the film’s premise, Shoojit explained that “I Want To Talk” is a simple yet profound exploration of family dynamics, everyday challenges and the lessons they impart.
Shoojit Sircar also expressed his continuing connection to Irrfan’s legacy through his son Babil Khan. Babil, who debuted in “Qala” and was recently seen in “The Railway Men”, has been a focus of Shoojit Sircar’s mentorship. Shoojit further added that he feels he has the responsibility to guide Babil, support him and give him confidence.
With Abhishek Bachchan’s powerful performance and Shoojit Sircar’s masterful storytelling, the film “I Want To Talk” reminds us to cherish life’s small moments and find strength in family bonds.
