Shreyas Iyer Reacts On The Question Of Becoming Future Captain Of The Indian Team

The Indian cricket team was searching for a suitable candidate for the number 4 position for a long time but that search came to an end during the New Zealand tour. The NZ tour was quite miserable for team India as they lost the 3-match ODI series and the 2-match test series as well despite whitewashing the hosts by 5-0 in the T20I series.

Shreyas Iyer, the young Indian cricketer, utilized the opportunity that he got in the ODI series against New Zealand as he scored a 100 in the first match and then he scored 50 plus score in the remaining two matches. Shreyas is also the captain of IPL team Delhi Capitals and in IPL 2019, DC finished third which is its best performance since 2012. During an interview, the Mumbai cricketer talked about the different phases of his cricketing career.

Shreyas is also referred to as the next captain of the Indian team by his fans but when he was asked about it, he said that he is not thinking about it as he just wants to enjoy the present.

He also talked about the reaction of former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid when the latter saw the former batting for the first time. Shreyas recalled that it was a four-day match and the last over of the first day. He was batting at the score of 30 something when everyone was thinking that he would play it safe as it was the last over; however as the bowler tossed the ball in the air, Shreyas hit it for a six. After he returned to the dressing room, Rahul Dravid came to him and asked what type of stroke he played in the last over. Shreyas said that now he understands what Rahul Dravid wanted to convey him in view of the fact that he is fully aware of the value of his wicket.

The 25 years old player first got the chance to play for India in 2017 in Delhi against New Zealand but he didn’t get the chance to bat in that match and later, he got the chance to play against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala.

Shreyas got famous in 2014 after he played for the U-19 team at the World Cup. He played great knocks in the domestic cricket but didn’t get the chance to debut at international level until 2017 and even after that, he didn’t get good chances.

Fortunately for the DC skipper, he started getting chances after the WC 2019 and he used all the opportunities to the maximum. Shreyas Iyer has played 18 ODIs till now and has scored total 748 runs while in 22 T20Is, he has scored 417 runs.

We wish him all the best for his future endeavours!
