Shreyas Iyer, one of the most talented middle-order batters of India, has built a reputation for balancing flair with discipline. Known for his aggressive stroke play and composed temperament, Shreyas Iyer has led IPL teams and represented India across formats. Despite ups and downs in selection, he remains focused on performance and growth rather than the noise surrounding fame.
In a recent interview, Shreyas Iyer revealed that Nike, the global sportswear brand he is associated with, had offered him a trip to Wimbledon this year. Interestingly, he declined the opportunity, noting that it felt like almost every Indian cricketer had gone to the tournament. While the event drew many familiar faces from Indian cricket including legends like Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni along with current stars such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer chose to stay away from the spotlight.
He had recently featured in a Duleep Trophy match, representing West Zone against Central Zone, following his appearance in the IPL final where he led Punjab Kings to a second-place finish in his debut season as their captain.
Post that, Shreyas Iyer traveled to Barcelona where he briefly met tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, just a day after Alcaraz’s hard-fought Wimbledon final loss to Jannik Sinner. This meeting was also arranged by Nike, which supports both the athletes (Shreyas Iyer & Carlos Alcaraz).
Reflecting on his decision, Shreyas Iyer shared in an interview that while the Wimbledon invitation was tempting, he preferred to stay away and continue working on his craft. His absence from the recent T20 Asia Cup squad had drawn criticism but he remained undeterred.
Shortly afterward, he was appointed captain of the India A side for upcoming matches against Australia A, a sign of the selectors’ continued faith in his leadership and potential.
Speaking about his approach, Shreyas Iyer emphasised that he focuses only on things within his control. For him, it is about constantly improving his skills and staying ready for the next opportunity which he intends to seize with full commitment when it comes.
