India captain Shreyas Iyer is confident that his side will be far more comfortable when they begin their five-match T20I series against England on Wednesday, believing that the playing conditions will be much more familiar than those they encountered during their disappointing tour of Ireland.
India suffered a surprise 2-0 series defeat in Ireland, their first men’s T20I series loss since 2023. The hosts claimed the opening match by 34 runs before sealing a dramatic one-run victory in the second T20I to complete a historic clean sweep.
Looking back at the defeat, Shreyas Iyer pointed to the unique nature of the Belfast venue as one of the major challenges for his side. He explained that the ground featured an uneven outfield with a noticeable slope and unusually shaped square boundaries, making field placements and outfield positioning difficult. According to the skipper, the conditions required tactical adjustments that Indian players are generally not accustomed to, especially since IPL venues offer more consistent playing surfaces and symmetrical dimensions.
Shreyas Iyer believes England will present a completely different challenge. He noted that the grounds in England are flatter, have more conventional dimensions and provide an atmosphere that Indian players are already familiar with. He also highlighted that the team has considerable experience playing in similar conditions, which should help them settle into the series much quicker.
India’s batting unit struggled throughout the Ireland series as the hosts’ seamers took full advantage of the extra bounce and expansive square boundaries to restrict stroke-making across both matches. Following the opening defeat, Shreyas Iyer had admitted that his team failed to execute its plans in unfamiliar conditions and stressed that no opponent could be taken lightly in international cricket.
India will now look to put that disappointing campaign behind them when they face England in the opening T20I of the five-match series at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Wednesday.
