India’s batting unit put on a spectacular display in the second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow, posting a massive total of 402 after being asked to bat first. While the scoreboard reflected complete dominance, the innings also revealed the ambitious mindset of India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill.

Afghanistan chose to bowl first despite the intense afternoon heat, a decision that ultimately worked against them. Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan made the visitors pay heavily, with Ishan Kishan registering his second ODI century since returning to the side. Together, the duo laid the foundation for a huge total and took the game away from Afghanistan.
After the match, Shubman Gill admitted that reaching a double century had crossed his mind while he was batting. However, he emphasised that his primary focus remained on continuing his attacking approach and helping India push towards a score in the range of 430 to 450 runs.
The Indian skipper also revealed that he had set personal goals for the series. One of those goals was to stay at the crease for longer periods, bat deep into the innings and convert promising starts into match-defining scores. According to Shubman Gill, building the habit of finishing innings is something he has been consciously working on.

A major highlight of the match was the explosive 224-run partnership between Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan for the third wicket. The pair reached the milestone in just 141 balls, completely dismantling Afghanistan’s bowling attack and putting India in full control.
The scorching weather made conditions extremely challenging throughout the game. Several players struggled with cramps and Shubman Gill himself had to use an ice collar while batting. Having spent around 40 to 45 overs at the crease, he experienced cramps in multiple parts of his body and did not return to the field after his dismissal. Despite the physical toll, Shubman Gill later confirmed that he was feeling much better.
The innings not only showcased Shubman Gill’s class and confidence but also highlighted his hunger for even bigger achievements on the international stage.
