Indian cricketer Shubman Gill continued his impressive run as India captain by achieving a major milestone during the first ODI against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday, July 14.
Leading India in the three-match ODI series, Shubman Gill played a crucial knock of 80 runs off 75 balls while chasing a target of 259. The 26-year-old struck 11 fours and one six before retiring hurt due to cramps.

Shubman Gill also shared a 101-run partnership for the third wicket with vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, who scored 35 runs, helping India take control of the chase. With this innings, Shubman Gill took his tally to 510 international runs as India captain at Edgbaston, becoming the first Indian captain to score 500 or more runs at a single venue in England. The previous record belonged to Virat Kohli, who scored 469 runs in six innings across five matches as India captain at Edgbaston.
Shubman Gill also became only the seventh Indian captain to score 500 or more international runs at a single venue, joining an elite list featuring Sunil Gavaskar, Mohammad Azharuddin, MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
The overall Indian record is still held by Mohammad Azharuddin who scored 954 runs as captain in 32 international matches at Sharjah Cricket Stadium between 1990 and 1999.

Shubman Gill first captained India at Edgbaston during the Test match in July 2025, where he made scores of 269 and 161, laying the foundation for his remarkable record at the venue.
The world record for the most international runs scored by a captain at a single venue belongs to former Australia captain Allan Border, who amassed 1,670 runs in 48 innings at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Congratulations Shubman Gill!
