The skipper of the Indian test cricket team, Shubman Gill delivered a career-defining performance in the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, scoring a commanding 269 runs off 387 deliveries. Entering the crease at No. 4, Shubman Gill showcased his range and temperament, hitting a flurry of boundaries, 30 fours and three sixes, during his long stay at the wicket.
This innings not only marked his maiden double century in Test cricket but also elevated him to a rare group of cricketers who have achieved the feat of scoring 200 or more runs in both Test and ODI formats. Before this Test milestone, Shubman Gill had reached the double century mark in ODIs with a 208-run knock against New Zealand in Hyderabad in early 2023.
The achievement places him alongside four other players, three of them being Indian legends who have previously accomplished this dual-format milestone.
The first to reach this landmark was Sachin Tendulkar, who during his storied international career, accumulated six double centuries in Tests and famously became the first to score a double century in ODIs back in 2010.
Virender Sehwag followed the next year, replicating the feat with a mammoth ODI score (219) and a series of big Test innings, including multiple triple centuries.
Rohit Sharma, India’s white-ball captain, is the only player with three ODI double tons to his name, along with a notable double hundred in Test cricket. His adaptability across formats has long been a testament to his dominance with the bat.
Among this elite list, Chris Gayle stands out as the only non-Indian cricketer to have accomplished the double-century mark in both the formats. Over a lengthy career for West Indies, Gayle showcased his power-hitting with massive Test scores and a memorable ODI double century during a World Cup clash.
With his latest knock, Shubman Gill not only underlined his growing stature in international cricket but also etched his name into a club defined by consistency, longevity and exceptional batting prowess.
