Snapdeal’s App Rankings Improved; #AppWapasi Backfired On Aamir’s Haters

While attending the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, actor Aamir Khan also joined the debate on growing intolerance when he said that there is a “sense of growing disquiet” in the country. He talked about a conversation that he had with his wife, he said, “When I chat with [his wife] Kiran at home, she says, ‘Should we move out of India?'” he said. “That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make. She fears for her child. She fears what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day.”

After this statement, he was the target of various politicians, celebrities and common public too as his statement was not acceptable to many people. He got some support also but it was very less in comparison to criticism.

Aamir Khan is the brand ambassador of e-commerce firm Snapdeal and people chose Snapdeal also to vent out their anger against Aamir. The social media was flooded with messages asking people to downvote the app of Snapdeal and uninstall it, till they don’t remove Aamir from their ads. The idea was to hit at the monetary aspect of Aamir, #AppWapasi trended on the twitter as a good number of online users downvoted, uninstalled the app and pledged that they won’t buy anything from Snapdeal till Aamir is removed by them.

A lot of stories did circulated saying that Snapdeal has been hit badly due to #AppWapasi, however Snapdeal maintained a calm attitude and distanced itself from Aamir’s comments as “personal”.

However, there was an unexpected twist in the matter as Snapdeal’s App actually went up in the ranking as a result of the publicity it got through #AppWapasi.

Snapdeal’s App was at 28th rank in Google Play Store on the November 23, when Aamir made the statement, it remain there on 24th also, but it went one position up to 28 on 25th November but on November 26th when #AppWapasi was at its complete strength, it goes above by 5 places, its biggest jump in the last 30 days.
