Marvel Studios was bankrupt back in the ’90s. In the year 1998, the company had just started fresh after their bankruptcy and started signing movie deals and were desperately looking for cash.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Marvel Entertainment made an offer to Sony during the negotiation of Original Spiderman as the company was in desperate need of money. Marvel head then Ike Perlmutter made an offer to Sony Pictures the rights to the cinematic characters such as Thor, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Captain America, Iron Man and more. Marvel was ready to give the rights of the whole stable of superheroes at just $25 million.

Sony rejected the offer and further claimed: “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters except Spider-Man.” Marvel ended up selling the rights to Sony Pictures at $10 million.

These characters are the golden ticket of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it is one of the most profitable series of MCU movies and with every release they’re earning more money.

The recent release of MCU Avengers: Endgame has created history and has done a humongous business around the globe. Sony could have been part of the successful Marvel Cinematic Universe but alas they thought Spiderman would be the only successful venture of Marvel.
