Sunil Gavaskar Hits Out At Selectors & BCCI Even Though India Defeated West Indies

The Indian cricket team started their new WTC cycle with a bang as they won the 2-match test series against West Indies by 1-0 and it won’t be wrong to say that India would have whitewashed the series if rain had not spoiled the game. Rain didn’t let the game take place on the last day of the second test match; while India needed 8 wickets, West Indies needed to score 289 runs for saving the game which was surely very difficult for them considering their performance in the series.

The Indian team seemed pretty dominant in the whole series in all the segments but the former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar doesn’t seem to be very happy about it. If you remember, Sunil Gavaskar was not even happy with the selection of the team because he wanted the selectors to give a chance to the youngsters and rest senior players. Little Master stated at that time that it would make transition easier in the future as having youngsters with international experience will always be an advantage for the team.

While writing in a column for a news daily, Gavaskar asked the selectors what new they learned which they didn’t know earlier. He further asked whether they don’t think that trying youngsters in series like this would have been better. He goes on to question whether the selectors don’t want the senior and established players to face any challenge from the youngsters.

Sunil Gavaskar adds that as Ajit Agarkar has taken over as the chief selector, it would be interesting to see whether there will be a change in the approach for making a team for future or the same old story will get repeated.

However, Sunil Gavaskar was full of praises for the former Indian skipper Virat Kohli who scored a century in the first innings of the second test match. This is 29th test century and 76th international century of Virat Kohli and it is quite special  because that match was Virat Kohli’s 500th international game and 100th test match between India and West Indies.

Sunil Gavaskar said that though Kohli missed a century in the first test match yet in the second test match, he got it. He says that the innings by Kohli shows that not just talent but a player should also have the capability to understand the opposition, pitch and the conditions.
