Sunjay Kapur’s life had always been marked by high-profile moments, but his sudden passing earlier this year has left his family entangled in a storm of legal disputes. His wife Priya Sachdev Kapur has now approached the Delhi High Court with a plea that all parties sign a non-disclosure agreement before she reveals details of her late husband’s assets. The court is scheduled to hear her request on Thursday.
The High Court had earlier, on September 10, directed Priya to provide a detailed account of both movable and immovable properties held by Sunjay Kapur as of June 12, the day he di*d. With assets estimated at around Rs. 30,000 crore, the case has become one of the most high-stakes inheritance battles in recent memory.
Sunjay Kapur, who was 52, collapsed while playing polo in England this June. Initial reports painted a dramatic picture, suggesting a bee sting or even the possibility of swallowing a bee during the match. However, weeks later, the Surrey Coroner’s office confirmed that he had di*d of a sudden heart attack, brought on by underlying heart disease, and dismissed earlier claims of an allergic reaction.
The legal battle that followed has pitted Priya Kapur against Sunjay’s children from his earlier marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor. Married in 2003, Sunjay and Karisma divorced in 2016 but share two children — Samaira and Kiaan. The children have challenged the will presented by Priya, calling it fabricated and claiming it unfairly cuts them out despite their father’s assurances about securing their future through a family trust.
Priya Kapur, on her part, has defended the will’s authenticity, pointing out that the children had already received Rs. 1,900 crore from the trust shortly before they filed their challenge. Adding to the rift, Sunjay’s mother Rani Kapur has also joined the proceedings, accusing Priya of sidelining her and selling her son’s assets.
The battle over Sunjay Kapur’s empire, much like his life, remains dramatic and deeply personal.
