Sunjay Kapur, a Delhi-based businessman, was as well known for his high-profile marriages as for his business empire. His sudden d*mise earlier this year while playing polo in the UK left behind not only grief but also a complicated inheritance battle. What should have been a moment of remembrance for a life lost has now turned into a courtroom tussle over his Rs 30,000-crore estate.
In the Delhi High Court, the late industrialist’s widow Priya Sachdev Kapur and his former wife Karisma Kapoor’s children have found themselves on opposite sides of a bitter dispute. Represented by their mother, Karisma’s two children have challenged the validity of Sunjay Kapur’s will, claiming they were unfairly excluded from their father’s vast personal estate.
According to their petition, the will dated March 21, 2025, leaves everything to Priya Sachdev Kapur. The children allege that Priya, along with two associates, conspired to suppress the document for over seven weeks before revealing it at a family meeting in late July. They believe this points to manipulation and raises questions about its authenticity.
On the other side, Priya Kapur’s lawyer, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, defended her case by highlighting that the children are already beneficiaries of a trust and recently received assets worth Rs 1,900 crore. He argued that this alone disproves any claim of unfair exclusion. In his words, it was not as if they had been “left on the streets”. He also pointed out that for 15 years, Karisma Kapoor had distanced herself from Sunjay, suggesting her absence should weigh in the court’s view of the matter.
Rajiv Nayar reminded the court that Priya Kapur is a widow caring for a six-year-old child and urged compassion. He confirmed that the will is in their custody and even offered to share it with the plaintiffs under a non-disclosure agreement.
The bench, led by Justice Jyoti Singh, examined the will and directed both the parties to file their written statements within two weeks, with rejoinders to follow shortly after. Summons and notices for interim relief were also issued. The court further asked Priya Kapur to provide a detailed list of her movable and immovable assets.
This legal clash comes nearly a decade after Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur ended their 13-year marriage in 2016. Despite the separation, their children now find themselves caught in the storm over their father’s estate, fighting against their stepmother for what they believe is their rightful share.
The case is still unfolding but it already underscores how questions of love, loyalty and legacy often collide in the most painful ways when vast fortunes are at stake.
