There is no doubt that for India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, the past few days have been an emotional rollercoaster. Like every teammate, he was deeply shaken when Shreyas Iyer suffered a frightening injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. But now, the news is much brighter, Shreyas Iyer is stable, talking and recovering steadily in the hospital.
The incident took place during Australia’s innings when Shreyas Iyer dived backward to complete a difficult catch. Although he held onto it, he appeared in pain as he clutched his side. Initially, it didn’t seem too serious but things took a worrying turn once he reached the dressing room. His condition deteriorated rapidly as his vital signs dropped, prompting immediate medical attention. He was rushed to a Sydney hospital where doctors discovered internal bleeding caused by a laceration in his spleen.
Shreyas Iyer was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and placed under constant observation. Fortunately, the prompt action of the medical team helped stabilize his condition. In the days since, his health has improved and he has now been moved out of the ICU.

Speaking to reporters, Suryakumar Yadav shared that he has been in touch with Shreyas Iyer, offering both comfort and reassurance. He explained that he initially tried calling Iyer directly but later reached out to the team’s physio Kamlesh Jain who confirmed that Iyer was stable. Soon after, Iyer himself began replying to messages, a positive sign that eased everyone’s concerns.
Surya said that doctors are still keeping a close eye on Shreyas Iyer for the next few days but expressed confidence that he is on the right track. The Indian captain said that it was initially hard for the players to grasp how serious the injury was, as Shreyas Iyer seemed composed right after taking the catch. It was only once he got to the dressing room that the gravity of the situation became clear, leading to his urgent hospitalisation and further scans.
Trying to lighten the mood amid all the anxiety, Suryakumar added with a smile that while the doctors described it as a rare and unfortunate injury, it somehow suited someone as “rare and special” as Shreyas Iyer. He said that the entire BCCI and team management are standing firmly behind him and are eager to bring him home once doctors give the all-clear.
For now, what matters most is that Shreyas Iyer is safe, stable and slowly returning to health, a relief for his teammates and millions of fans who had their hearts in their throats just days ago.
We also wish for a speedy recovery of Shreyas Iyer.
