What looked like a simple catch nearly turned into a nightmare for India during their 2026 T20 World Cup clash against the Netherlands in Ahmedabad on February 18.
In the final over of the match, Shivam Dube bowled a full and wide delivery to Zach Lion-Cachet, who mistimed it high into the off-side. Suryakumar Yadav began running backwards from extra-cover, while Rinku Singh charged in from the deep, seemingly in a better position to complete the catch.
Both the fielders called for the ball. In the final moments, Suryakumar gestured animatedly toward Rinku who was already settled under it. Rinku appeared ready to take the catch but seeing his skipper rush in, he moved aside at the last second. The confusion led to the ball spilling and the two narrowly avoided a serious collision.
Suryakumar Yadav fell awkwardly and remained seated on the ground for a brief moment, sparking concern among teammates, including Jasprit Bumrah. Fortunately, the Indian captain was fine and quickly got back on his feet, though he was seen having a discussion with Rinku soon after.

Such moments can be dangerous in cricket, as players focus solely on the ball while sprinting at full speed. Generally, the outfielder, in this case Rinku, has the advantage while running forward. Still, safety mattered more than the catch, especially in a match that had little bearing on India’s Super Eights qualification.
Despite the late drama, India sealed a 17-run victory. They posted 193/6, powered by a blistering 76-run stand off just 35 balls between Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube. Varun Chakaravarthy picked up three wickets, while Shivam Dube claimed two to wrap up the win and for his superb all-round performance, Shivam Dube was honoured with the Player of the Match award.
