Gautam Gambhir’s Wake-Up Call – Team India Has To Work On This Aspect Before T20 World Cup

As the excitement for the IPL 2026 auction builds, former Australian cricketer Aaron Finch has made a suggestion that has caught the attention of fans and analysts alike. Aaron Finch, who led Australia to their first ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title, believes that Kolkata Knight Riders should part ways with two of their biggest names — Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell.

Venkatesh Iyer, once seen as one of the most promising Indian talents of KKR, had a forgettable IPL 2025 season. The 30 years old left-hander, who has represented India in both ODIs and T20Is, was bought for a staggering ₹23.75 crore in the mega auction. Expectations were high but his performance failed to match the price tag. Across 11 matches, Venkatesh Iyer managed just 142 runs, struggling to find rhythm or consistency.

Aaron Finch, in a discussion on a sports channel ahead of the IPL retention deadline, explained that such a hefty investment did not make sense for a player who wasn’t used in his natural position. He noted that Venkatesh Iyer, initially bought as an opener, was shifted down the order and rarely bowled, a move that limited his impact. According to Aaron Finch, it’s a price too steep for a player who could not play to his strengths.

Andre Russell, on the other hand, has been synonymous with KKR since joining the franchise in 2014. Known for his explosive batting and match-turning performances, Andre Russell has been a fan favourite for over a decade. However, his 2025 season didn’t live up to his usual standards either. In 13 matches, he scored only 167 runs and picked up eight wickets. Aaron Finch acknowledged Andre Russell’s long-standing value to the team but felt it might be time for KKR to consider moving on or exploring a trade, even if it’s unlikely they will actually release the Caribbean star.

Reports suggest that KKR could release Venkatesh Iyer, along with Moeen Ali, Anrich Nortje and Quinton de Kock, ahead of the upcoming auction. For a franchise that prides itself on balancing star power with fresh talent, these could be defining decisions.

Aaron Finch’s comments highlight a reality many teams face in the IPL, the need to evolve. As the 2026 season approaches, KKR may find themselves at a crossroads, having to choose between loyalty to their veterans and the pursuit of a stronger, more balanced squad for the future.
