Here’s the tweet from Elon Musk.

The tweet read, “Excited about the Tesla Autopilot software release rolling out next month. New control algorithm feels as smooth as silk.”

But the story suddenly had an interesting twist.

A curious Indian decided to go ahead and ask Elon about their plans to launch automated cars in India and asked if it could be anywhere in near future.

Here’s the tweet.

“Are there any chances for Tesla to release in India in 2017 or 2018? Waiting for that.”

Well, everyone did hope for a positive reply from Elon if he replied, which he did. But for the moment it seemed like all hopes were crushed by the disclaimer given by Elon. He said that he was told that 30% of parts must be locally sourced and the supply doesn’t yet exist in India to support that. But he also added that he was not sure about the information and he could be wrong.

This is what he tweeted;

“Maybe I’m misinformed, but I was told that 30% of parts must be locally sourced and the supply doesn’t yet exist in India to support that.”

His tweet clarified that we will not see automated vehicles so soon? Well, After reading the tweet the Government came to the rescue.

The Government replied to Elon Musk clarifying about the policies to do business in India.

Here’s the tweet by GOI.

“With respect to news reports on launch plans of Tesla in India being delayed, please note some key clarifications #MakeInIndia”

The clarifications included,

1. Not correct. FDI policy of India does not mandate any such minimum sourcing of components by manufacturers.

2. After manufacturing in India, a foreign investor is permitted to sell in any manner: wholesale, retail including e-commerce.

3. FDI policy also permits wholesale of imported goods in India without sourcing conditions.

4. It is only for retail trading of goods, that sourcing conditions are mandated. Conditions not applicable to manufacturers as goods are manufactured in India.

Now let’s see if we get automated car or not, but maybe the chances just got a little higher.
