It wasn’t a moment Indian fans wanted to remember. Under the bright lights of the Narendra Modi Stadium, India’s T20 World Cup journey hit a painful speed bump that few saw coming.
India locked horns with South Africa in their first Super 8 clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on February 22 and things fell apart quickly. The Proteas piled up 187/7, putting the pressure firmly on the hosts. India’s reply never found momentum, the batting unit collapsed for just 111 runs in 18.5 overs, handing South Africa a crushing 76-run victory. The heavy defeat, delivered by the finalists of the 2024 edition, triggered sharp criticism and raised serious questions about the team’s direction.
But inside the dressing room, something changed.
According to India’s star all-rounder Shivam Dube, that loss became the turning point of the entire campaign. Speaking after India lifted the trophy, Shivam Dube admitted the team had been doing fine before that game but the setback forced them to reset mentally and raise their level.
He shared that the players “pulled up their socks” after the defeat and transformed into a completely different side. The real peak, he said, came when it mattered the most, i.e., in the final.
And the results certainly backed his words.
After that loss, India’s batting exploded. They hammered 256/4 against Zimbabwe, smashed 253/7 versus England and piled on 255/5 against New Zealand. In another dominant display, they chased down a stiff 196-run target in just 19.2 overs against the West Indies during their third Super 8 match at Eden Gardens. The team that once looked shaken suddenly became unstoppable.
Shivam Dube played a key role in this turnaround. Featuring in all the nine matches for India, he scored 235 runs and chipped in with five wickets, quietly delivering the balance every champion side needs. He also opened up about the clarity in his role. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav had kept the instructions simple, maintain a high strike rate with the bat and stay disciplined with the ball when needed.
Shivam Dube said that the responsibility wasn’t new. He had a similar role in the previous World Cup but didn’t make as many big contributions then. This time, he focused on staying present, taking one game at a time and avoiding overthinking about the bigger picture.
Known for his power-hitting role, Shivam Dube’s job is naturally high-risk, clearing boundaries and keeping the scoreboard moving. But pressure never clouded his mindset. He trusted his preparation, believed in his ability and stuck to what the team expected from him.
There were no personal promises or flashy targets. The mission was simple and shared by everyone in the squad – win the World Cup at home.
