There was a period in the 90s when Bobby Deol, the son of one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars Dharmendra, was carving out his own identity with surprising ease. His long hair, confident screen presence and refreshing romantic appeal made him a youth favourite almost instantly. Crowds flocked to theatres just to watch him and his rising popularity even made some established actors uneasy. It was clear that he wasn’t just another debutant, he was a phenomenon in the making.

And then came Soldier, the film that completely transformed Bobby Deol’s career. Released in 1998, it quickly became a major commercial success and went on to become the second highest grossing film of the year. This was a time when Salman Khan and Aamir Khan dominated the box office and Shah Rukh Khan was racing toward superstardom. Yet Bobby managed to hold his own in the middle of this power-packed lineup.

Before Soldier, Bobby Deol had already shown promise with films like Barsaat, Gupt, Kareeb and Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. While they received mixed responses, they helped him build a strong presence. But it was Soldier that truly established him as a leading man to watch. Directed by the hitmaker duo Abbas–Mustan, the film combined action, mystery, romance and chart-busting music into a gripping ride.

Audiences were hooked by its fast-paced storytelling, surprising twists and Bobby Deol’s magnetic performance. Theatres remained packed for weeks and the film’s success felt even more significant because it released the same year as the massive hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Despite the competition, Soldier still managed to secure a spot right behind it in the year-end box-office rankings.

The film also outshone several other major releases of 1998, including Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Ghulam and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya. Made on a modest budget of Rs 8.25 crore, it earned an impressive Rs 38.88 crore, becoming one of the biggest box office winners of the year. Its music topped charts, its direction was widely praised, and over the years, Soldier gained cult status among fans.

For Bobby, Soldier wasn’t just a film, it was a turning point, a celebration of his talent and a reminder of the magnetic charm he brought to 90s Bollywood.
