8. Illy Push-Button House

The illy Push Button House The “illy Push Button House” is the creation of Adam Kalkin, an architect who likes to design prefab houses with beautiful interiors from old shipping containers. While some of his designs are quite luxurious and complex, the push button house is a transformer of sorts. It can go from looking like a closed and rusted old shipping container to an attractive (if open-walled) home in 90 seconds. The illy Push Button House will make its U.S. debut at the Time Warner Center from November 29 to December 29, great for both illy espresso and design lovers alike. Originally unveiled at the Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition in June 2007, the illy Push Button House is a fully functional and sustainable home built within a standard industrial shipping container that takes about 90 seconds to fully open. The house, which is designed by artist/architect Adam Kalkin, is driven by hydraulic cylinders which are controlled by a specially designed computer located inside the kitchen island. When you push a button, the shipping container opens into a six room apartment with a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom, living room and library - all constructed from recycled or recyclable materials.
