India is a land of temples and some of them are so secretive and mysterious that even the highly advance science and equipments are not able to solve their mystery. One of the most mysterious temples of India is Veerabhadra temple; its devotees also call it with another name which is Lepakshi temple. It has 70 huge pillars which are constructed in Vijayanagar style but one pillar among these 70 is very interesting. This pillar is not touching the ground and it is hanging from the ceiling. A piece of cloth can be passed through the space between the pillar and the floor, this activity is done by almost every visitor.
The temple was constructed in 1583 by two brothers known as Virupanna and Veeranna in the Anantapur district of Southern Andhra Pradesh. The temple has a story from Ramayana, which says that when Ravana kidnapped Sita and was taking her to Lanka, on listening Sita’s screaming Jatayu came and had a fight with Ravana, he felt on the ground in injured condition. When Rama found Jataya, he said, “Le Pakshi”, which means “rise, bird” in Telugu. So this is how the temple got its name.
The temple has many beautiful sculptures of gods, goddesses, dancers and musicians; it also has a huge mural of Veerabhadra, measuring into 24 X14 feet which is the biggest mural of any mythological character in India. Veerabhadra is the angry god which was created by the Lord Shiva. Many engineers including a British engineer of British era tried to solve the pillar mystery but no one has succeeded till now.
