Umran Malik has always carried an aura that few young bowlers possess, the thrill of raw pace. Even during challenging phases, he has held on to the belief that someone who can consistently touch 150 kmph will always remain in the conversation. As he continues to sharpen his skills, his story flows naturally into another chapter of hope and hard work.

The Jammu and Kashmir pacer burst onto the international scene in 2022, debuting in T20Is against Ireland and later playing his first ODI against New Zealand. The early days were a mix of promise and pressure, with expensive spells teaching him lessons that every fast bowler encounters at some stage. In total, he featured in ten ODIs and eight T20Is before injuries and form temporarily pushed him out of the selectors’ plans.

But Umran Malik has never been one to back down. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, he said that he trusts his ability to return stronger because his speed sets him apart. He explained that he has been adding depth to his bowling, working hard on slower deliveries, Yorkers and improving his control in red-ball formats. He further added that his focus is on steady improvement, while selection remains a decision he is willing to leave to the management.

Despite India’s stacked pace lineup, Umran Malik does not see competition as a hurdle. To him, it has always been part of the journey. If he is fit and taking wickets, he believes opportunities will naturally come. His mindset reflects a mix of youthful confidence and the maturity that setbacks often bring.

That spirit was on display during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he dismissed Aryan Juyal, Karan Sharma and Rinku Singh in a sharp spell against Uttar Pradesh. Although Jammu and Kashmir were bowled out for just 84, Umran Malik’s performance was a reminder of the spark he brings whenever he hits rhythm.

For now, the young pacer continues to work quietly, sharpening his weapons and trusting that his moment will return. And when India once again looks for raw pace, few names will echo louder than Umran Malik, the bowler who still believes in his speed, his progress and his comeback.
