At the present time, a number of new things are happening in India; firstly, the demonetization of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currency notes took place and later, the Supreme Court made playing of the National Anthem compulsory in cinema halls before screening of a movie.
Demonetization rendered Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 useless and as a result, there were long queues in banks and post offices for deposits, withdrawals and exchanging old currency notes with the new ones. ATMs also saw a huge rush and many ATMs have been closed down due to non-availability of cash. The situation as of now has improved a little but still it will take time for things to get normal.
The Supreme Court passed the order of playing the National Anthem in cinema halls in order to instill the feeling of nationalism among the citizens and make them learn to show respect to the National Anthem.
Some people have praised these decisions while several others have criticized them, and hence, they become a topic of discussion among the foreign media too. Comedy Central’s The Daily Show which is being hosted by Trever Noah has made fun of both these decisions in the episode which has been released online on 1st Dec. The show had a section which was titled as ‘India’s Unusual New Policies’.
He took a dig at Hillary Clinton while talking about the useless old Indian currency of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 when he referred them “as worthless as Hillary inauguration ticket”. He said, “that looks like a TSA line at the JFK”, while showing long queues of people waiting outside banks and ATMs to withdraw and exchange money.
He made fun of the SC’s order on National Anthem when he said, “I think that’s gonna make it especially awkward during erotic films,” and while he was saying that, poster of an adult movie “Pyaar Ki Ek Raat” was shown in the background.
Well, he didn’t stop here and continued,
“I just wanna know how far this National Anthem thing goes in India, first they make you hear it before the movie, then it’s gonna be before you check out of a grocery store, then before every performance of the National Anthem, there’s going to be another National Anthem.”
