Vidya Balan recently opened up about an incident from her early acting days, recounting a moment of discomfort that turned into a lesson in communication and empathy within the film industry. The actress shared how she once declined a movie opposite Akshaye Khanna, not by personally informing him but by asking her manager to convey the message to the director. At the time, she didn’t connect with the script and chose to quietly opt out rather than having a direct conversation.
However, the decision came back to her during the filming of the 2007 romantic drama Salaam-e-Ishq, where she met Akshaye for the first time after turning down the earlier project. To her surprise, he brought up the rejection in a rather blunt manner. She recalled how Akshaye questioned her for not informing him directly, leaving her flustered and nervously seeking refuge in her co-star John Abraham. She laughingly admitted that she went up to John and asked him to “save” her from the situation. Eventually, she realised that Akshaye had been joking and the tension was far less serious than she initially feared.
Vidya reflected on that time, admitting that being new to the industry, she was uncomfortable with confrontation and didn’t want to risk offending anyone or appearing ungrateful for a movie offer. She further added that what she did not fully understand back then was how much emotional and creative investment goes into writing a script. Over time, especially after marrying producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, she gained a deeper appreciation for the effort that filmmakers put into every project.
Describing herself as someone who values honesty but also respects the hard work behind every story, she explained that while she tries to be straightforward, she is also mindful of how difficult it can be for someone to hear “no” after putting their heart into a script.
On the professional front, Vidya was last seen in Anees Bazmee’s horror-comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 which featured an ensemble cast including Kartik Aaryan, Madhuri Dixit and Triptii Dimri. The movie was released in theatres on November 1, 2024.
