Vijay Varma became a household name after starring in Ranveer Singh’s Gully Boy. Following his breakthrough role, his popularity soared with performances in projects like “Darlings”, “Jaane Jaan” and “Mirzapur”. Currently, he has captivated audiences with his role in “IC814: The Kandahar Hijack”. However, his journey in the entertainment industry was far from easy as he faced several setbacks, including being dropped from popular projects like “Sacred Games”.
During an interview, Vijay Varma stated that he didn’t have any offers for a long time until he did “Gully Boy” despite the fact that the casting directors had faith in him. He said that he used to get shortlisted and reached final stages only to get dropped. He also revealed that he got locked for a role in “Sacred Games” and did costume measurements but then he got dropped. He further added that though he faced challenges, he remained resilient and kept faith.
After “Gully Boy”, work started pouring in but Vijay Varma noticed a pattern in the roles he was offered. He shared that he initially couldn’t envision himself in the role he played in “Darlings”. After that, he found himself cast in a series of roles as very cunning characters. Although he wanted to avoid being typecast, he found it difficult to change his trajectory on his own.
He appreciated the directors who recognized his ability to play a range of roles, such as Sujoy Ghosh who cast him in “Jaane Jaan”, Homi Adajania who brought him into “Murder Mubarak” and Anubhav Sinha who offered him a role in “IC814”. He noted that the film industry operates in unpredictable ways, giving opportunities to actors when they see potential. Vijay stressed that he didn’t break any stereotypes because he did not make it, the industry made it and broke it as well. His journey reflects a combination of persistence, talent and the support of visionary filmmakers who recognized his range as an actor.
Currently, Vijay Varma is making waves with his performance in “IC814: The Kandahar Hijack” which is available on an OTT platform. As he continues to explore diverse roles, he remains a compelling talent in the Indian film industry.
