Virat Kohli has made it clear that winning the 2027 ODI World Cup is more important to him than any personal achievement. With the tournament expected to be his last World Cup for India, the former captain has revealed the kind of performance he dreams of producing on the biggest stage.
Virat Kohli is currently enjoying an excellent run of form. Over the last one year, the right-handed batter from Delhi, who is the second highest run-scorer in ODI cricket, has scored four centuries and five fifties in 13 ODIs for India.
The 37-year-old batter, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, is now preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The tournament will be hosted across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia next year.
Ahead of the ongoing three-match ODI series between India and the West Indies, Virat Kohli spoke about his plans and preparations for the World Cup.
In a video shared by Star Sports on Monday, Virat Kohli was asked about his personal target for the 50-over World Cup. He said his ideal dream would be to play a match-winning innings in the final, especially while chasing a target.

Virat Kohli explained that finishing the World Cup final with a match-winning performance would be a special moment for him. However, he made it clear that if India win the tournament without him producing such an innings, he would be equally happy.
Since the 2027 edition is expected to be Virat Kohli’s final ODI World Cup for India, he wants to make the opportunity count. For him, lifting the trophy matters more than personal glory.
Virat Kohli also spoke about the competitive mindset that drives him as a batter. He said that when a team is in trouble, he enjoys imagining himself staying at the crease and helping India recover. Making a major impact in difficult situations is one of the things that motivate him to keep competing at the highest level. At the same time, Virat Kohli acknowledged that individual ambitions are important, but the team’s larger goal must always come first.
Kohli has already played in two ODI World Cup finals for India. In the 2023 final, he scored a fifty. Earlier, in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, he contributed a crucial 30-odd-run knock.
With the 2027 World Cup approaching, Virat Kohli now has another opportunity to chase the one major ODI prize that remains central to his ambitions.
