Indian cricket fans were left surprised when Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s names briefly disappeared from the ICC rankings on Wednesday. Just last week, Rohit had moved to the second position in ODI batting rankings, while Virat Kohli held the fourth spot with 736 points.
But when the latest list was updated, both the players suddenly vanished from the website. The confusion was later cleared when the ICC confirmed it was a technical glitch and by the end of the day, the two stalwarts were restored to their rightful places.
The ICC admitted that there had been multiple issues affecting this week’s rankings and assured that they were being investigated. Once the error was fixed, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s names were back at their previous positions.
Meanwhile, there were major changes in the bowling rankings. India’s Kuldeep Yadav slipped to third in ODIs as South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj reclaimed the No. 1 spot. Keshav Maharaj produced a brilliant performance of five wickets for 33 runs in Cairns, guiding South Africa to a 98-run victory over Australia.
His effort earned him the Player of the Match award and helped him overtake Kuldeep Yadav and Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana, marking his return to the top, a position he also held briefly in late 2023. Among Indians, Ravindra Jadeja remains the only other bowler inside the top 10. India, notably, has not played an ODI since their Champions Trophy triumph.
Other players also made notable progress. West Indies pacer Jayden Seales climbed 15 spots to reach 18th place after his match-winning spell of six for 18 against Pakistan. Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed moved up to joint 39th, while Roston Chase of the West Indies improved to 58th.
In batting, Shubman Gill continues to lead the ODI charts with 784 points, while Shreyas Iyer is steady at sixth. West Indies skipper Shai Hope entered the top 10 after an unbeaten 120 against Pakistan, moving up to ninth place.
In T20I rankings, young Indians continue to dominate, with Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma holding the top two positions and Suryakumar Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal also featuring in the top 10.
It is really good that technical glitch was sorted soon.
