As Indian cricket looks beyond the present and toward the next big milestone, familiar names continue to play a central role in shaping the journey. Even as the team undergoes changes, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain firmly invested in India’s long-term ODI vision, including preparations for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed on Tuesday, January 14, that the two senior batters are actively involved in discussions around planning and strategy. According to him, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who are now focused on limited-overs cricket, are fully in sync with the team management and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Sitanshu Kotak indicated that their priority is clear — when they are part of the setup, the aim is to win consistently, wherever India play.
Sitanshu Kotak highlighted that the experience Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bring to the table naturally feeds into team discussions. Their understanding of the ODI format, upcoming fixtures and conditions, especially with an eye on South Africa, is regularly shared with the coaching staff and younger players. He stressed that these conversations happen often and are constructive, helping align the squad’s approach well in advance.
In recent months, there has been outside speculation about the equation between the senior players and the new coaching group, particularly after India’s struggles in Test cricket and the transition that saw Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma step away from the red-ball format ahead of last year’s England tour. However, Sitanshu Kotak dismissed any suggestion of disconnect, saying communication within the group has been steady and positive. He acknowledged that public perception can be influenced by social media chatter but from inside the dressing room, he sees healthy discussions and shared intent.

Meanwhile, India’s ODI squad also saw a fresh addition this week. Delhi all-rounder Ayush Badoni was named in the team on Monday as a replacement for the injured Washington Sundar for the remaining two matches. Sitanshu Kotak explained that Ayush Badoni’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball played a key role in his maiden call-up. With Washington Sundar’s injury disrupting the bowling options in the first ODI, the team felt the need for someone who could step in and deliver a few overs if required. Ayush Badoni’s recent performances, including his run-scoring form and bowling ability in the IPL, made him a practical and timely choice.
