Records don’t just happen, they are made over years of consistency, discipline and hunger. On April 27, batting icon Virat Kohli added another unforgettable chapter to his legacy by becoming the first player ever to score 9000 runs in the Indian Premier League.
Playing his 275th IPL match for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Virat Kohli walked in needing just 11 runs against Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium. The moment came quietly but meaningfully, he reached the milestone with a single on the sixth ball of the sixth over during a 76-run chase. It took him 6732 balls to get there, showing not just longevity but incredible consistency.
Looking at the all-time IPL run-scorers list, Virat Kohli stands far ahead. He is followed by Rohit Sharma, who has scored 7183 runs in 276 matches for Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians. Shikhar Dhawan comes next with 6769 runs from 222 matches, representing five teams between 2008 and 2024.
Among overseas players, David Warner leads with 6565 runs in 184 matches for Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, KL Rahul, despite scoring just 1 run in this match, has accumulated 5580 runs in 153 games across five franchises.
Virat Kohli’s night could have turned even more historic. If he had scored 27 runs in total, he would have become the first player to reach 1200 T20 runs against a single team — Delhi Capitals. At that point, he already had 1184 runs in 34 matches against them.
There was another milestone within reach. Scoring 35 runs in the same game would have made him the first player to hit 8000 IPL runs in India. He was already sitting at 7976 runs in 231 matches at home venues.
This wasn’t just about numbers. It was a reminder that Virat Kohli’s greatness lies in his ability to keep pushing boundaries, season after season.
