Washington Sundar is certainly a very talented cricketer but he is a sorted cricketer as well and this is why, instead of dwelling on the shifting positions or the pressure of expectations, he chose to speak with a kind of easy clarity that reflects exactly how he plays — steady, unfazed and quietly confident.
After a long day of play, he faced the inevitable questions about his fluctuating role in the batting order, but he handled them with the same composure he shows on the field.
Washington Sundar’s place in the lineup changed dramatically in the ongoing series against South Africa. In the first Test, he walked in at number three. In the next, he found himself at number eight. The change came after captain Shubman Gill’s neck injury forced the team to rework its entire batting plan. For most players, such constant movement could be unsettling but Washington Sundar dismissed any such concern with a smile.
He explained that he is genuinely happy to bat wherever the team needs him. For him, adapting to different positions is not a burden but something that adds excitement. He said that he wants to be the kind of cricketer who steps up in any situation, whether it involves batting higher up the order or coming in late. His focus is simply to stay ready and contribute in whatever way the team asks.
Washington Sundar also shared that playing in varied situations gives him opportunities many players do not get and he sees that as something special rather than disruptive. His calm acceptance of these shifting roles reveals a maturity beyond his years, a willingness to see challenges as chances to grow.
When asked about India’s tough position in the match, Washington Sundar did not waver. He leaned on optimism, saying that staying positive is essential because cricket, like life, can change in unexpected ways. His words carried a quiet hopefulness, a reminder that nothing is over until it truly is.
Through all the uncertainty, Washington Sundar’s steady mindset stands out — adaptable, humble and always ready for whatever comes next.
