The best weekend getaways from Delhi to escape the smog this November are Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Lansdowne, Kasauli, Jim Corbett, Nainital and Chail. All are within about 240 to 350 km by road, and hill towns usually have far cleaner air than the plains in late autumn.

Delhi-NCR’s air slipped into the “poor” category on 21 October 2026, and GRAP Stage 1 restrictions kicked in. If your weekend plan is “breathe properly for two days”, here are seven places that work.

1. Rishikesh (about 240 km)

The quickest escape. River rafting season is on, the cafes along Tapovan are open, and the evening Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat is worth the trip alone. Take the Shatabdi to Haridwar if you want to skip driving.

2. Lansdowne (about 260 km)

A quiet cantonment town with pine forests and almost no crowds. Perfect if your idea of a holiday is a long walk, a book and zero honking.

3. Jim Corbett (about 250 km)

The Bijrani and Jhirna safari zones are usually open by now, and Dhikala, the most popular zone, typically opens around mid-November. November mornings are great for spotting birds and deer. Book safari permits online well in advance; weekend slots go fast.

4. Kasauli (about 290 km)

Small, clean and calm, with colonial-era churches and views over the plains. Stay a night to see Chandigarh’s lights from the top.

5. Mussoorie (about 290 km)

The classic choice. Walk Mall Road early before the crowds, then head to Landour for quieter lanes, bakeries and Ruskin Bond’s neighbourhood.

6. Nainital (about 310 km)

Boating on Naini Lake in clear November weather is a different experience from the summer rush. Nearby Bhimtal and Sattal are calmer if Nainital feels busy.

7. Chail (about 340 km)

Home to one of the world’s highest cricket grounds and thick deodar forests. It is a good alternative to Shimla, with a fraction of the traffic.

Tips for a smog-break weekend

  • Leave early. Start before 6 am to beat traffic on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and the Ambala route.
  • Avoid Diwali weekend if you can. Diwali falls on 8 November; hill stations and highways get packed that weekend.
  • Pack layers. Days are pleasant, but nights in the hills can drop close to single digits.
  • Check road updates on the state police or traffic handles before you leave.
