Mahesh Balmiki a second-year student of mining considered selling his kidney to pay off a loan of Rs 2.7 lakh he had actually taken for his studies. Mahesh said, “There was a lot of pressure. Due to my prolonged illness, I had to incur expenses for my treatment and couldn’t give back the loan I took for my studies.”

Out of options, Mahesh finally decided to search for a buyer for one of his kidney. But later confronted his friends about his decision and told them that in the thriving black market of Kidney, people asks each and every information about the donor along with their caste. Since, he is a ‘Dalit’ no one agreed to buy his kidney.

Mahesh whose dream was shattered in front of his eyes, then took a job as sweeper back at native town Alwar, Rajasthan.

Sensing his helpless situation, Mahesh’s friends approached award winning activist Sandeep Pandey, who then took this matter and reached out to BHU alumni for funds to pay off Mahesh’s loan of Rs 2.7 lakh. He ultimately succeeded in paying off his loan. But sadly Mahesh is unable to continue his studies and has to work as a sweeper for just Rs 4,000 a month, since his father is paralyzed and mother works as a domestic help in several houses.

Mahesh thanked Mr. Sandeep and says, “I have no option other than to clean and sweep. Sandeep sir helped me get rid of the loan through funds he collected from former IIT-BHU students. I have paid everything back.”
