On the dreadful night of 16th December 2012, a girl was beaten and raped by six men in a moving bus. A 23 year old physiotherapy intern, Jyoti Singh took a private bus from Munirka, South Delhi with her friend Awindra Pratap Pandey; there were six men in the bus including the driver. These six men raped the girl and inserted an iron rod in her private part. Not only this, her friend was also beaten badly and afterwards, they both were thrown on road in almost nude condition to die. The condition of the girl was very serious and thirteen days after the horrific incident, she was shifted in a hospital in Singapore where she died just after two days. As it is not permissible to bring the victim’s name in public in the case of rape, the girl was given the name of “Nirbhaya” which means fearless.
All the accused were arrested by the police and booked for s*xual assault and murder. Ram Singh, one of the rapists committed suicide by hanging himself on March 11, 2013 in police custody; however, the lawyers and family members believed it to be a murder. The case was taken into a fast track court and the juvenile (minor) was sentenced to three years of jail in a reform facility while the other four have been sentenced death by hanging. The point that needs special attention is that the juvenile convict was said to be the most cruel and gruesome of all the six and he would be out of jail after finishing his term.
When this girl came to know about the releasing of the juvenile, she took the crime towards Nirbhaya personally and decided to take matter into her hands, punishing the rapist in her own style which seems to be pretty correct and deserving for the convict.
