When Rajesh Khanna Felt Jealous By A Rising Icon Whom He Made To Wait For Hours On A Set

On a heavy July morning in 2012, Mumbai seemed to pause as Rajesh Khanna’s final journey moved through its streets. The crowds were silent, the atmosphere weighed down by the loss of a man who once defined superstardom in Hindi cinema. Outside his bungalow, family members, close friends and members of the film industry gathered to say goodbye to the actor who had ruled hearts for decades.

Among them stood Amitabh Bachchan, quietly present as the last rites were performed. There were no grand gestures, only a stillness that reflected grief. The moment carried added meaning because the two actors shared a complicated history — one shaped by admiration, rivalry and the inevitable passage of time.

Rajesh Khanna had been the undisputed star of the early 1970s, a phenomenon whose popularity was unmatched. But in the year 1973, the release of Zanjeer marked a turning point for Hindi cinema. Amitabh Bachchan emerged as a powerful new force and almost overnight, the balance of stardom began to change. What followed was often described as rivalry, but those close to the industry knew it was far more layered than that.

Despite competing careers, the two actors respected each other deeply and even shared memorable screen moments in films like Anand and Namak Haram. Years later, theatre owner and producer Manoj Desai recalled a deeply moving exchange at Rajesh Khanna’s funeral. As the family waited before taking the mortal remains to the cremation ground, Amitabh Bachchan quietly reflected on how time changes everything. Amitabh told Manoj Desai that he had waited for Rajesh Khanna for 2 hrs on a set and now he was lying there. Amitabh Bachchan added that he said to Rajesh Khanna at that time that everyone would meet the same fate.

The remark was not bitter, but thoughtful, capturing the fleeting nature of fame.

After Namak Haram, the two legends never worked together again. Their powerful pairing ended quietly, reportedly amid tension during a phase when the industry itself was changing. Accounts from that period suggest misunderstandings and insecurity played a role, with Rajesh Khanna feeling unsettled as Amitabh Bachchan’s star continued to rise. Rajesh Khanna himself later admitted that he struggled with jealousy when major films such as Deewar began going to the younger actor.
