In the film industry, the dynamics of fame change quickly. The same crowd that once cheers for an actor can drift away when a new face captures the spotlight. Popularity in cinema has always been fleeting, and those who live through its highs and lows often carry valuable lessons for future generations.
Ashish Vidyarthi recently shared one such experience, recalling his meeting with legendary star Shammi Kapoor.
During an interview, Ashish Vidyarthi remembered his time in Sharjah while shooting for the serial Dastaan. Shammi Kapoor was also there for a film project and in a casual moment, offered him a piece of advice that stayed with him forever. Shammi Kapoor explained how, when his own stardom began to fade, people mockingly asked him why the crowds were no longer following him. His response was both witty and revealing, he told them that the crowd was outside Aashirwad, the bungalow of Rajesh Khanna, who had taken over as the new superstar.
Ashish said that Shammi’s words left a deep impact on him. What Shammi wanted to convey was that the industry’s love is not permanent. The same people who celebrate your success may walk away when your time passes. He reminded that success is largely destiny and while it must be enjoyed, it should never be mistaken as something everlasting.
Shammi Kapoor himself was one of the brightest stars of the 1960s. His unique dancing style, charm and powerful performances made him a cultural icon. Films like Professor (1962), Kashmir Ki Kali (1964), Teesri Manzil (1966), Brahmachari (1968) and An Evening in Paris (1967) cemented his place as a leading man of his time. His popularity earned him the title of the ‘Rebel Star’ and in 2011, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to Indian cinema.
But as new stars like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan rose in the 1970s, Shammi gradually stepped away from lead roles. Though his era ended, his legacy endured until his passing in August 2011. His reflections, as remembered by Ashish Vidyarthi, remain timeless reminders of how unpredictable stardom can be.
