“Why Isn’t Prithvi Shaw Playing?” Ex-Ind Cricketer Questions After DC’s Crushing Defeat To KKR

Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2026 campaign is hanging by a thread after a heavy eight-wicket defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday. The loss not only damaged DC’s playoff hopes but also raised fresh questions about the team’s strategy and selection choices under captain Axar Patel.

With only three league matches remaining, Delhi Capitals are now on the verge of elimination. One of the biggest talking points this season has been the continued absence of opener Prithvi Shaw, despite the team’s repeated batting struggles. Delhi had retained Prithvi Shaw for INR 75 lakh ahead of the season after he went unsold in the previous IPL auction but he has barely been given an opportunity.

Former India spinner Murali Kartik openly criticised the team management for ignoring Prithvi Shaw. He questioned why the franchise brought the aggressive opener back if they had no intention of using him. Murali Kartik pointed out that Prithvi Shaw’s attacking style at the top could have given Delhi more flexibility and balance in the batting order. He also suggested that the management appears to be trying every option except the one they already have in Prithvi Shaw.

On the field, KKR completely dominated the contest with both bat and ball. Delhi started reasonably well but their innings lost momentum during the middle overs due to KKR’s disciplined spin attack. Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy and Anukul Roy kept the scoring under control and picked up regular wickets, restricting DC to 142/8.

Pathum Nissanka was Delhi’s top scorer with a smooth half-century, while Ashutosh Sharma fought till the end with 39 runs off 28 balls. However, the total proved far from enough against a confident KKR batting lineup.

In reply, Finn Allen produced a stunning unbeaten century off just 47 balls and completely tore apart Delhi’s bowling attack. Cameron Green supported him well with an unbeaten 33 as KKR chased down the target comfortably with 35 balls remaining.

The win marked KKR’s fourth straight victory and kept their playoff hopes alive, while Delhi Capitals were left searching for answers after another disappointing night.
