Kuldeep Yadav has emerged as one of the most dependable spinners of India in recent times, admired for his sharp variations and ability to trouble the best batters in the world. His journey, however, has not been smooth. After facing setbacks and a period of criticism, the left-arm spinner has worked tirelessly on his skills and mindset, and today his performances are once again making headlines. This resurgence was especially visible during the Asia Cup where he has been India’s match-winner on more than one occasion.

Former cricketer and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar recently shed light on some of the lesser-known aspects of Kuldeep Yadav’s preparation. He revealed that Kuldeep trained by bowling on sand surfaces, where the ball tends to grip and stop a little more. The idea behind this practice was to force himself to generate sharper bite and turn by putting extra effort into his deliveries.

Abhishek Nayar explained that this helped Kuldeep bowl with greater effectiveness on slower tracks, such as those in Dubai where India is currently playing its continental tournament.

Kuldeep Yadav did not stop there. He also made technical changes to his run-up. Earlier, he had a slightly angled approach and an exaggerated jump before releasing the ball. According to Abhishek Nayar, these adjustments often reduced his balance and momentum. By straightening his run-up and keeping his movement smoother, Kuldeep has been able to transfer energy more efficiently into his bowling. This change has translated into better rhythm and consistency, making him more dangerous against top opposition.

Abhishek Nayar further highlighted the importance of support from Kuldeep’s childhood coach during difficult times. While critics questioned his form and place in the side, his long-time mentor ensured that he remained focused and motivated. Having a coach who knew him from the very beginning proved invaluable, as it allowed Kuldeep to trust the process and believe in himself.

His story serves as a reminder that even established cricketers must adapt, evolve and stay resilient to succeed at the highest level.
