Sunday’s Asia Cup 2025 clash between India and Pakistan in Dubai was nothing short of electrifying. Chasing 172, India’s openers came out with fearless intent and the packed stadium roared as the runs flowed freely.

Abhishek Sharma’s dazzling 74 from just 39 balls and Shubman Gill’s fluent 47 from 28 carried India to a commanding start. Their 105-run stand in less than ten overs not only laid the foundation for a six-wicket win but also helped India secure their highest successful chase against Pakistan in T20 internationals.

Among those who were left impressed by the young duo was former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh. Watching the partnership unfold, he couldn’t help but shower praises on Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma for their remarkable strokeplay and composure.

He explained that when these two bat together, even a target of 250 might not look out of reach. According to him, the key for the openers is to extend their stay at the crease for at least 12 to 15 overs, as that would put India in a position to chase totals well beyond 200 with ease.

At the same time, Yograj Singh pointed out areas where improvement is still needed. He noted that Shubman Gill has been dismissed more than once in similar fashion, bowled on the same line and length, which is something the youngster must work on. He also felt that both the batters are starting to grow dependent on one another, as their dismissals often follow each other closely.

Yograj Singh went on to share his broader philosophy about cricket, stressing that no player is ever bigger than the game. For him, cricket rewards those who remain lifelong students, always willing to learn and adapt. Numbers, records and milestones may bring glory but true success comes from humility and the discipline to play responsibly through the innings.

While celebrating India’s win, Yograj Singh cautioned against complacency. He believes the Indian team has the strength to lift the Asia Cup but reminded young players that the job is not just to start aggressively but to carry the innings deep. As he put it, lasting till the 20th over is as important as the fireworks that light up the powerplay.
