The backlash was swift, with several former Indian cricketers expressing their discontent. Among them, Yograj Singh, known for his outspoken nature, strongly condemned the remarks. He stated that individuals outside the sport should refrain from making disparaging comments about players who have brought honour to the nation. Expressing his deep disappointment, he suggested that such statements should not be tolerated and emphasised the reverence cricket holds in India.

Yograj Singh, father of legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, further criticised those who ridicule sportspersons, asserting that they do not deserve to remain in the country. Drawing parallels with instances in Pakistan where similar remarks were made, he underscored the need for accountability in public statements regarding national sporting figures.

Following the widespread outrage, Shama deleted her post and clarified her stance. She maintained that her comments were about the general fitness of a sportsperson rather than body-shaming. Defending her right to express an opinion, she reiterated that in a democracy, comparisons and critiques should be permissible. However, her explanation did little to quell the criticism.

In response to the controversy, senior Congress leader Pawan Khera distanced the party from Shama’s remarks. He stated that the views expressed were personal and did not reflect the party’s position. Furthermore, he confirmed that Shama had been asked to delete her post and exercise greater caution in the future. He reaffirmed the party’s deep respect for sporting icons and their contributions to the nation.

The incident has reignited discussions about the fine line between opinion and personal attack, especially concerning public figures in sports. It also highlights the influence and responsibility of political voices in shaping public discourse, particularly in a cricket loving nation like India.
