“You Are Done,” Dinesh Karthik Took A Dig At Ravi Shastri While Talking About His Last Test

Dinesh Karthik recently shared a funny yet honest moment from his cricketing journey, reflecting on how his Test career came to an end in 2018. Speaking during a podcast in England alongside Ravi Shastri, Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton, DK described how Ravi Shastri, the then head coach of India, informed him after the Lord’s Test that he would not be part of the next match. Unlike Nasser Hussain, who chose to retire on his own terms at Lord’s, DK joked that the decision for him was made by the coach.

Earlier that year, Dinesh Karthik had made a return to the Test side after several years, stepping in for Wriddhiman Saha who was injured. His comeback began with a Test against Afghanistan and after performing well in domestic cricket and white-ball internationals, he was included in the squad for the England tour. However, his batting didn’t click in challenging English conditions. He managed scores of 0 and 20 in the first Test at Edgbaston, followed by 1 and 0 at Lord’s. That match turned out to be the final appearance of his Test career.

Recalling that time, Dinesh Karthik pointed out the difference in how he and Nasser Hussain ended their careers at the same venue. Nasser Hussain had approached his coach to say he was finished, while Dinesh Karthik humorously noted that his coach Ravi Shastri came up to him and said there was no need for him to return.

Following Dinesh Karthik’s omission, India gave a chance to young Rishabh Pant, who had just impressed in the IPL. Though Pant had early struggles behind the stumps, his aggressive and fearless batting stood out. It was clear that he was going to be a serious contender for the wicketkeeping spot, eventually overtaking Saha to become a key figure in the team.

Dinesh Karthik and Ravi Shastri are currently in England and the podcast was recorded ahead of the Lord’s Test in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The venue holds a lot of personal and cricketing history, making the occasion even more meaningful.

The series is currently finely balanced. England won the first Test at Headingley but India bounced back strongly with a dominant win at Edgbaston.

Rishabh Pant, now considered one of the finest wicketkeepers of India, has already made a huge impact with the bat, scoring 342 runs in just four innings, underlining the journey that began when he replaced Dinesh Karthik seven years ago.
