India’s rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal shared a light-hearted yet insightful post-match conversation with teammate Dhruv Jurel after registering his maiden Test century in England during the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley.
The century, which saw Yashasvi Jaiswal score 101 runs off 159 balls on Day One, was more than just a personal milestone, it was the culmination of a determined mindset and relentless practice, traits that, according to Dhruv Jurel, have been part of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s identity for years.
The exchange between the two cricketers was captured by the BCCI and released on social media, drawing admiration from fans for its warmth and honesty. In the video, Dhruv Jurel praised Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unwavering focus, recalling how even during the India ‘A’ tour, the left-handed opener was adamant about scoring runs in English conditions.
Dhruv Jurel highlighted that even when conditions were challenging, especially with the ball swinging considerably, Jaiswal didn’t shy away from facing such adversity in the nets. According to him, that insistence was exactly what made him different from others on and off the field.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, smiling through the exchange, initially deflected the question with a laugh, asking Dhruv Jurel to describe his off-field behaviour. But he eventually opened up, stating that his routine revolves around focused preparation and mental calmness.
He said that he doesn’t engage in much outside cricket but becomes intensely serious when needed, especially during matches or while training. He further stated that his emphasis is always on staying mentally composed and preparing thoroughly, which allows him to handle high-pressure situations better.
Continuing the conversation, Yashasvi Jaiswal explained that every net session he undertakes is treated like a rehearsal for match-day pressure. He said that the goal is to make every ball in practice count so that when he faces a challenging situation in the middle, he’s mentally and technically ready. He believes that this dedication to simulation and self-discipline is a major factor in his ability to perform consistently across different conditions.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century at Headingley wasn’t just a one-off performance, it added to an emerging pattern. In each of the last three countries where he played his first Test, including West Indies and Australia (Perth), he has converted the opportunity into a three-figure score. What made this innings more impressive was his resilience in the face of physical discomfort; despite suffering from cramps in both hands, he battled on to complete his hundred and set the foundation for India’s dominant 359/3 at stumps.
Reflecting on his preparation, Yashasvi Jaiswal spoke about the match simulation during the India ‘A’ stint, particularly an intra-squad game against India’s main team. Facing bowlers like Harshit Rana and Jasprit Bumrah in that setting, he admitted that he found scoring difficult. But instead of backing down, he persisted, trusting that surviving difficult spells would strengthen his confidence. According to him, that experience became crucial in mentally equipping him to endure tough patches and capitalise when the opportunity came.
