A talented and young painter, Lavanya, who was exceptionally perfect with her work, committed suicide in her Porur (Tamil Nadu) residence on Friday night. However, she also left a suicide note, which highlighted ‘Hurtful feminism’.
Yes, the note read
“I have had enough of my feminism, which hurt those close to me. They gave me their love but I was rude to them, assuming it was a way of demonstrating my feminine strength, penn sakthi”,
Lavanya left behind her 2 year old daughter, her brother, mother and above all, her devastated husband. Well, her hubby, Potrarasan Suban, studied with her in the same batch at Government College of Fine Arts and was away at Dakshin Chitra (A living history museum) when Lavanya committed suicide. He teaches ceramics to students at Dakshin Chitra.
Lavanya and her husband in the same house with her mom and brother. While Lavanya’s family stayed on the 1st floor, her brother and mom stayed on ground floor.
Suban was away and Lavanya and her daughter had gone downstairs to spend some time with her mom. She kept chatting with her mom till 1am and then went upstairs, leaving her daughter behind.
Now, when Lavanya wasn’t to be seen till Saturday morning, her mom went to her room to check if everything is alright. She was shocked to see that the door was locked and Lavanya wasn’t opening it in spite of repeated knocking. Her brother broke the door and rushed inside, only to find Lavanya hanging from the ceiling.
They took her to SRMC hospital nearby, but she was declared dead there. After post mortem, the family got her body and they completed the last rites.
As per reports, her devastated mom was quoted as saying;
“She left us all alone and she is gone, Why did she have to do this, we do not know”,
Even Prof K Pugazhenthi, her painting teacher during post-graduation, said
“She was one of my best students. She was very ambitious and her painting was just brilliant. The space of artists doesn’t see many women excelling but her work distinctly stood out.”
He added
“Her paintings used to be a reflection of herself and her thoughts on the liberation of women. Her paintings and her writings — she was a writer too — were vocal of the need for unshackling the woman”,
Lavanya’s close friend said that she was very calm and brilliant and always desired for liberation of women.
