Yuzvendra Chahal has decided to step away from First-Class cricket but the Indian spinner has made it clear that his cricket journey is far from over. The 36-year-old Haryana cricketer announced his retirement from red-ball cricket on Friday, October 2, through a post on Instagram.
Yuzvendra Chahal has represented India in 72 ODIs and 80 T20Is but never got the chance to play a Test match for the country. During his 17-year career from 2009 to 2026, he made 49 First-Class appearances for Haryana, North Zone, Northamptonshire and India A. He finished his First-Class career with 148 wickets from those 49 matches.

Reflecting on his decision, Yuzvendra Chahal said red-ball cricket was much more than just another format for him. He recalled first holding a red cricket ball at the age of 10 and said First-Class cricket taught him important qualities such as patience, character and resilience.
Yuzvendra Chahal also revealed that playing Test cricket for India had always been one of his biggest dreams. However, despite carrying that ambition for many years, he never received a Test cap. His final First-Class match came at Lord’s, making the occasion particularly emotional for him.
Despite ending his red-ball career, Yuzvendra Chahal said he is satisfied with the journey he has had and remains grateful for every opportunity he received in First-Class cricket. He also stressed that the memories created during his red-ball career will always remain special.

However, Yuzvendra Chahal made one thing clear in his retirement announcement — he is not finished with cricket yet. The spinner said his desire to represent India remains strong and that he believes he still has cricket left in him. He added that he will give everything to earn another opportunity to play for India in ODIs and T20Is.
Chahal also thanked the Haryana Cricket Association for its continued support and belief throughout his career. He specifically acknowledged Mr. Ranbir Singh Mahindra and Mr. Anirudh Singh Chaudhary for their support during his journey.
From picking up his first red ball at the age of 10 to playing his final First-Class match at Lord’s, Yuzvendra Chahal’s red-ball career has now come to an end. But his ambitions in white-ball cricket remain alive.
We wish Yuzi all the best for his endeavours!
