Many times Bollywood filmmakers have been accused of copying the concepts and stories of movies of other languages for making their flicks and it is often said that there is scarcity of creativity in the Hindi film industry. Mostly, Hindi movies are heavily inspired or copied from southern language films but there have been few occasions when southern moviemakers have got so impressed with a Hindi flick that they have officially remade it.

Here is a list of Hindi movies with their southern remakes:

1. Andhadhun (2018):

Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu and Radhika Apte starrer film was a hit at the box-office and it received many awards as well including 3 National Film Awards. The black comedy crime thriller was co-written and directed by Sriram Raghavan and after its success in Hindi, the movie was remade in Telugu (“Maestro” -2021) and Malayalam (“Bhramam” – 2021) and its Tamil remake (“Andhagan”) is still awaiting its release.

2. 3 Idiots (2009):

Rajkumar Hirani directed movie which starred Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R Madhavan, Boman Irani and Sharman Joshi in important roles was a blockbuster at the box-office and it was also praised for the message that it gave in regard to the education system in India. The flick which was loosely inspired from Chetan Bhagat’s novel, Five Point Someone was remade in Tamil (“Nanban” – 2012) and Mexican (“3 Idiotas” – 2017).

3. Band Baaja Baaraat (2010):

Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma starrer film which was directed by Maneesh Sharma was the debut movie of Ranveer Singh and it performed pretty well at the box-office. While the Hindi version was produced by Aditya Chopra (Yash Raj Films), the Tamil remake (“Aaha Kalyanam” – 2014) was also produced by the same banner.

4. Munna Bhai MBBS (2003):

Rajkumar Hirani made his directorial debut with this movie which starred Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani, Gracy Singh, etc. in important roles and it was a big hit at the box-office. The legendary actor Sunil Dutt played a cameo in the film as he played the role of Sanjay Dutt’s father and the flick received many awards including one National Film award. The movie was remade in Tamil (“Vasool Raja MBBS” – 2004), Telugu (“Shankar Dada MBBS” – 2004) and Kannada (“Uppi Dada MBBS” – 2006). The flick was remade in Sinhala (Sri Lanka) as well and it was titled “Dr. Nawariyan” (2017).

5. Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006):

This was the sequel of “Munna Bhai MBBS” with Vidya Balan playing the female lead in the movie. The film was also loved by the audiences and it was remade in Telugu as “Shankar Dada Zindabad” (2007).

6. Delhi Belly (2011):

The black comedy flick was directed by Abhinay Deo and produced by Aamir Khan and it starred Imran Khan, Vir Das, Kunaal Roy Kapur, etc. in important roles. The movie was given “A” certificate by the censor board and it was remade in Tamil language (“Settai” -2013).

7. Dabangg (2010):

It was the debut movie of Sonakshi Sinha in which she played the female lead opposite Salman Khan and it was also the first movie of the “Dabangg” franchise. The film was a big hit and was remade in Tamil (“Osthe” – 2011) and Telugu (“Gabbar Singh” – 2012).

8. Jab We Met (2007):

Written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, “Jab We Met” starred Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan in lead roles. The movie created more hype because of the fact that Shahid and Kareena were dating each other at that time. “Jab We Met” was one of the highest earning movies of that year and it also won several awards. In fact, it won’t be wrong to say that it has achieved a cult status. The movie was remade in Tamil as “Kanden Kadhalai” starring Bharath and Tamannaah Bhatia and its Telugu dubbed version was titled as “Priya Priyathama”.

9. A Wednesday (2008):

The movie was directed by Neeraj Pandey and it starred Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah in lead roles. “A Wednesday” was an action thriller which was remade in Tamil and Telugu, simultaneously. In Tamil, the movie was titled as “Unnaipol Oruvan” and in Telugu, it was titled as “Eenadu” and both were released in 2009.

10. Amar Akbar Anthony (1977):

Directed by Manmohan Desai, “Amar Akbar Anthony” was a multi-starrer flick with some big names of the industry such as Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Pran, Neetu Singh, Parveen Babi, etc. The movie was a big hit and it was remade in Tamil (“Shankar Salim Simon”), Telugu (“Ram Robert Rahim”) and Malayalam (“John Jaffer Janardhanan”).
